Frequently asked questions

We recommend taking a breastfeeding class during their third trimester of pregnancy or around 36 weeks, which provides plenty of time to prepare and have all your questions answered before the baby arrives. You can also join our Baby Feeding Support Group each Tuesday from 10 am -11:30 am, where we have IBCLCs that will answer your questions about both breastfeeding and bottle feeding in a judgment-free zone.

There are many different breastfeeding classes available, so it’s important to find one that’s right for you. Some classes are held in person, while others are offered online or through a parenting book or video. You can also find a lactation consultant who can provide one-on-one help.

The most important thing is to prepare for success. Your midwife can help you find the resources needed to start your breastfeeding journey.

Breastfeeding classes cover everything from latching and feeding to more detailed topics such as expressing milk and handling common problems. They’re beneficial if you’re having problems breastfeeding or if you plan to bottle-feed your baby breastmilk. In breastfeeding classes, you’ll usually try different nursing positions and learn how to use a breast pump.

Breastfeeding classes are typically taught by Lactation Consultants and/or Midwives who are experts in the field. They provide supportive ways to learn more about breastfeeding and have your questions answered.

While breastfeeding offers numerous benefits, some families may experience initial discomfort or pain, concerns about milk supply, or find it to be quite time-consuming. These challenges can be temporary and often managed with proper support. At A Family Affair Birth Center, our expert midwives and doulas are here to offer guidance and resources to help you navigate any breastfeeding difficulties.

Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for both mothers and babies. Breast milk is rich in essential nutrients that support newborn growth and help develop strong immune systems. Additionally, breastfeeding can lower the risk of certain types of cancer in mothers, including ovarian and breast cancer. It may also reduce the likelihood of postpartum depression.

Breast milk is a unique living tissue that adapts its composition to meet your baby’s changing needs with each feeding. It truly is remarkable, and research continues to uncover its benefits.

At A Family Affair Birth & Pregnancy Care Center, we understand that every family is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. We promote a judgment-free environment with one guiding principle: Feed the Baby. If you choose to prepare a formula for your baby, please do not hesitate to reach out for guidance on the proper ways to prepare and store bottles and formula.

Yes, absolutely! Taking a breastfeeding class is highly recommended. Our virtual birth classes in San Diego equip expectant parents with essential knowledge and practical skills before birth. This proactive approach can reduce anxiety, build confidence, and help address common issues early on for a more successful breastfeeding journey.

Patient testimonials

The care of the midwives and staff at A Family Affair Birth Center has been so refreshing and comforting! They spend time to get to know you and how you want to approach birth. Instead of a quick appointment that is just measuring belly and listening to heartbeat they take the time to listen to you and help you have the best pregnancy possible.

The feeling inside is very comfortable and home-like. I really appreciated having a bed large enough for my husband and I to lay on with our newborn after she was born. Tamara is very professional and accommodating. I felt safe and comfortable there.

There is no shortage of praise for A Family Affair Birth Center. Both the owner, Tamara, and the San Diego County Midwives team (Gerri, Heather and Andrea) are incredible, warm, professional and everything you would want in a supportive birth team. Due to a series of unnecessary medical interventions with my firstborn, for my second pregnancy I was determined to achieve as natural and gentle a birth possible, and the team at A Family Affair Birth Center helped me to accomplish that.

We had a complicated pregnancy and birth, but Tamara helped us with incredible grace and she cared for us through the entire experience. We had originally planned to give birth at Tamara’s birth center, A Family Affair, but with the 20-week anatomy scan we received a tragic diagnosis. Even though Tamara had to direct us to a hospital team, she did so with such grace and she placed us in excellent hands at the hospital.

Tamara and her team were amazing and I can’t thank them enough for everything. She goes above and beyond for her families she’s helping. If you want a truly devoted, kind and loving person to be on you’re birthing team, someone with an amazing team of extraordinary woman who truly care about the health and well being of mama and baby I encourage you to visit A Family Affair Birth Center. And the care doesn’t just stop at birth.

We were so so blessed to be able to deliver our little on at A Family Affair Birth Center. Tamara, Darynee, and Denise are such an amazing team of birth professionals. They truly made us feel at home and comfortable leading up to the birth and even more so during the birth because of their warm personalities and immense knowledge of birth.

I loved my experience with A Family Affair Birth Center, it went as well as I could’ve imagined. Tamara was very informative on what we could do if I wanted to help labor on but was by no means pushing anything on me.

My experience with midwives Tamara and Darynee was incredible. They always treated me, my husband, and my baby with love and care and made us feel like family! From prenatal care to labor & delivery to postpartum care, we had the most incredible experience and couldn’t ask for more. If we have another child, we will definitely be using these wonderful midwives and their birth center. 10/10 I recommend them!
