What is a doula?

Experience a calm and happy birth with doula support

Many couples find that having a doula present at their birth significantly reduces the fatigue they experience during labor. Doulas are specially trained to support their clients before, during, and after labor, which can help reduce the stress and anxiety often experienced in labor.

Doulas also support partners, helping them feel more confident in their roles. Additionally, postpartum doulas can provide invaluable support in the early weeks after giving birth, helping to ease the transition to parenthood and the expansion of the family.

Why hire a doula?

Experience the joy having a natural childbirth

A Family Affair Birth Center is the perfect place for those who want to utilize the support of doulas. In a family-centered practice, we know all too well that partners often feel ill-equipped to be the birthing coach. They definitely want to participate, but don't have the professional experience of knowing the "what now," or "what position is best," or "how can you help my back pain?" That's where Birth Doulas come in.

They can begin with you at your home, then accompany you to the birth center when it is time to help you settle in. Doulas really can help you have a safe, warm, and loving birth experience.

  • Ease the anxiety and stress that comes with birth.
  • Help clients feel supported, informed and empowered.
  • Reduce "partner fatigue" with customized support.
  • Provide birth preparation sessions (This may or may not include full childbirth education classes, depending on the doula selected and whether she is a certified childbirth educator).
  • You are free to bring a doula you are already working with, or interview from our list of recommended doulas.

Frequently asked questions

The word “doula” is an ancient Greek term meaning “she who serves.” Nowadays, it’s commonly used to describe a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support during pregnancy and the postpartum period for mothers-to-be before they give birth and potentially even after their babies are born.

Historically, women have supported other women through labor. In the US, that job has transferred to hospital nurses. And while we love our nurses, families meet them the day of labor, and shift changes mean they come and go. But a doula is a professional birth companion who supports the mother before, during, and after labor. They are specially trained to help reduce the stress and anxiety a mother feels and can also support partners. Doulas do not replace partners, but rather help support you both through the birth process.

Postpartum Doulas can be an excellent resource for mothers in the early weeks after giving birth, helping to ease the transition to parenthood. They can support breastfeeding, proper naps and nutrition, and newborn care education.

A Birth Doula in San Diego County usually costs between $800 for a newer doula and $1,200 to $2,000.00 or more for highly seasoned doulas. The price may vary depending on the services offered. For example, some doulas may charge more for extra prenatal visits, while others may charge for separate lactation support.

Postpartum Doulas provide in-home support at an hourly rate. In San Diego County, the range is between $35-50/hr, depending on the needs and whether it is daytime or nighttime support.

Insurance coverage for doulas varies by provider and policy. Many plans may provide some degree of reimbursement for doula services. We recommend that you verify your benefits with your insurance company, and feel free to reach out to us at A Family Affair Birth Center for assistance in checking your coverage options.

A midwife is a medical professional who specializes in pregnancies and births. On the other hand, a doula provides emotional and physical support to a woman during labor. Some women find that having both a midwife and a doula offers the best possible care and support during childbirth.

While midwives focus on the medical aspects of pregnancy and childbirth to ensure normal progress, doulas concentrate on supporting the mother and her partner. They help ease anxiety, provide information, offer emotional support, and give massages and other comfort measures.

Midwives also offer some comfort and encouragement, but it’s important to ensure that they are not physically and mentally exhausted when critical medical moments arise. Being a doula can indeed be physically demanding.

“Midwives and doulas complement each other well, as they have distinctively different roles.”

It’s often beneficial to hire a doula during your pregnancy, ideally around the second trimester. This allows ample time for the doula to build a supportive relationship with you and your partner, ensuring that you are well-prepared for labor and childbirth. However, even if you are in your third trimester, it’s never too late to seek the support of a doula.

Doulas have the opportunity to support clients with continuity of care because, unlike the nursing staff in a hospital, we don’t have “shifts.” Instead, we are there until you give birth, plus 1 to 2 hours postpartum. (Some doulas work in teams if labor needs a rested doula to tend to a laboring woman’s needs)

Having a doula present at birth can significantly reduce the fatigue you experience during labor. Doulas are specially trained to support mothers before, during, and after labor, which can help reduce the stress and anxiety a mother feels.

Doulas can also support partners, helping them feel more confident in their roles. Additionally, postpartum doulas can provide invaluable support to mothers in the early weeks after giving birth, helping to ease the transition to parenthood.

Patient testimonials

The care of the midwives and staff at A Family Affair Birth Center has been so refreshing and comforting! They spend time to get to know you and how you want to approach birth. Instead of a quick appointment that is just measuring belly and listening to heartbeat they take the time to listen to you and help you have the best pregnancy possible.

The feeling inside is very comfortable and home-like. I really appreciated having a bed large enough for my husband and I to lay on with our newborn after she was born. Tamara is very professional and accommodating. I felt safe and comfortable there.

There is no shortage of praise for A Family Affair Birth Center. Both the owner, Tamara, and the San Diego County Midwives team (Gerri, Heather and Andrea) are incredible, warm, professional and everything you would want in a supportive birth team. Due to a series of unnecessary medical interventions with my firstborn, for my second pregnancy I was determined to achieve as natural and gentle a birth possible, and the team at A Family Affair Birth Center helped me to accomplish that.

We had a complicated pregnancy and birth, but Tamara helped us with incredible grace and she cared for us through the entire experience. We had originally planned to give birth at Tamara’s birth center, A Family Affair, but with the 20-week anatomy scan we received a tragic diagnosis. Even though Tamara had to direct us to a hospital team, she did so with such grace and she placed us in excellent hands at the hospital.

And the care doesn’t just stop at birth.

We were so so blessed to be able to deliver our little on at A Family Affair Birth Center. Tamara, Darynee, and Denise are such an amazing team of birth professionals. They truly made us feel at home and comfortable leading up to the birth and even more so during the birth because of their warm personalities and immense knowledge of birth.

I loved my experience with A Family Affair Birth Center, it went as well as I could’ve imagined. Tamara was very informative on what we could do if I wanted to help labor on but was by no means pushing anything on me.

My experience with midwives Tamara and Darynee was incredible. They always treated me, my husband, and my baby with love and care and made us feel like family! From prenatal care to labor & delivery to postpartum care, we had the most incredible experience and couldn’t ask for more. If we have another child, we will definitely be using these wonderful midwives and their birth center. 10/10 I recommend them!
