Pregnancy and childbirth are transformative journeys, and for many, the desire for a personalized, empowering, and safe experience leads them to explore the midwives model of care. This comprehensive approach to maternity care stands apart by prioritizing the unique needs of each birthing person, focusing on natural physiological processes, and fostering a deep, trusting relationship between the client and their midwife.

What is the midwives model of care?

At its core, the midwives model of care is a wellness-oriented approach to pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Unlike the often intervention-heavy medical model, it views pregnancy and birth as normal, healthy life events. Midwives, as highly trained healthcare professionals, are experts in supporting this natural process while also being equipped to identify and manage potential complications.

Key tenets of the midwives model of care include:

  1. Continuous relationship-based care: Midwives provide consistent care from early pregnancy through labor, birth, and the postpartum period. This fosters a deep, trusting relationship between the client and midwife, ensuring personalized attention and understanding of individual needs and preferences.
  2. Emphasis on physiological birth: The model actively promotes and supports the body’s natural ability to labor and give birth. Interventions are used judiciously and only when medically indicated, reflecting a belief in the body’s innate wisdom.
  3. Personalized education and informed choice: Midwives dedicate significant time to educating clients about their bodies, pregnancy changes, labor options, and newborn care. This empowers individuals to make well-informed decisions about their care, ensuring their choices are respected.
  4. Holistic assessment and support: Care extends beyond physical health to encompass emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. Midwives address the whole person, recognizing the interconnectedness of these aspects during the childbearing year. This holistic approach often integrates the supportive roles of other birth professionals, such as doulas, who provide continuous comfort and advocacy.
  5. Focus on prevention and early detection: Midwives aim to prevent complications through careful monitoring, risk assessment, and lifestyle guidance. They are skilled at recognizing deviations from normal and facilitating timely referrals to specialized medical care when necessary.
  6. Appropriate use of technology: While supporting natural processes, midwives are proficient in using necessary medical technologies and procedures when indicated, maintaining safety as a top priority.
  7. Client-centered and family-oriented: The care is tailored to the individual client’s needs and preferences, and often includes the partner and other family members, fostering a supportive environment for the entire family unit.

Choosing the midwives model of care means engaging in a partnership that supports your unique journey. You can anticipate:

  • Thorough prenatal appointments: Longer, more frequent visits than traditional care, allowing for in-depth discussions about your physical and emotional health, nutritional guidance, exercise, and preparation for birth.
  • Comprehensive labor and birth support: Your midwife will be present and actively involved during labor, offering continuous encouragement, comfort measures, clinical monitoring, and skilled assistance to support a natural birth process.
  • Extensive postpartum care: Follow-up visits, often including home visits, to monitor your recovery, provide newborn care guidance, address feeding concerns, and support your emotional well-being in the weeks following birth.
  • Empowering education: You will receive extensive information on all aspects of your pregnancy, birth options, pain management techniques (both natural and medical), and newborn care, empowering you to make informed choices.
  • Seamless collaboration if needed: While focused on normal physiology, midwives are trained to identify complications and will collaborate with or refer to obstetricians and other specialists when medical interventions become necessary, ensuring a safe transition of care.

The midwives model of care offers a holistic, respectful, and empowering alternative for individuals seeking a personalized and natural approach to their childbearing experience. It champions your body’s innate abilities while providing expert care every step of the way.

Patient testimonials

The care of the midwives and staff at A Family Affair Birth Center has been so refreshing and comforting! They spend time to get to know you and how you want to approach birth. Instead of a quick appointment that is just measuring belly and listening to heartbeat they take the time to listen to you and help you have the best pregnancy possible.

The feeling inside is very comfortable and home-like. I really appreciated having a bed large enough for my husband and I to lay on with our newborn after she was born. Tamara is very professional and accommodating. I felt safe and comfortable there.

There is no shortage of praise for A Family Affair Birth Center. Both the owner, Tamara, and the San Diego County Midwives team (Gerri, Heather and Andrea) are incredible, warm, professional and everything you would want in a supportive birth team. Due to a series of unnecessary medical interventions with my firstborn, for my second pregnancy I was determined to achieve as natural and gentle a birth possible, and the team at A Family Affair Birth Center helped me to accomplish that.

We had a complicated pregnancy and birth, but Tamara helped us with incredible grace and she cared for us through the entire experience. We had originally planned to give birth at Tamara’s birth center, A Family Affair, but with the 20-week anatomy scan we received a tragic diagnosis. Even though Tamara had to direct us to a hospital team, she did so with such grace and she placed us in excellent hands at the hospital.

And the care doesn’t just stop at birth.

We were so so blessed to be able to deliver our little on at A Family Affair Birth Center. Tamara, Darynee, and Denise are such an amazing team of birth professionals. They truly made us feel at home and comfortable leading up to the birth and even more so during the birth because of their warm personalities and immense knowledge of birth.

I loved my experience with A Family Affair Birth Center, it went as well as I could’ve imagined. Tamara was very informative on what we could do if I wanted to help labor on but was by no means pushing anything on me.

My experience with midwives Tamara and Darynee was incredible. They always treated me, my husband, and my baby with love and care and made us feel like family! From prenatal care to labor & delivery to postpartum care, we had the most incredible experience and couldn’t ask for more. If we have another child, we will definitely be using these wonderful midwives and their birth center. 10/10 I recommend them!
